Thirty jewellers from across India display their precious wares at The UE Jewellery Expo on at The Residency.

These are times when one needs cheering up. And nothing works better than a good old fashioned dose of jewellery sighting. And, jewellery shopping. Surprisingly, some of the pieces on display at the UE Jewellery Expo at The Residency, are quite affordable.

Thirty jewellers from across the country are exhibiting there. One of them is Rahul Chhawchharia of Traditions. He exhibits delicately wrought neckpieces with precious and semi-precious stones and a range of never-out-of-fashion jhumkas. The pieces here range upward of Rs. 5,000.

In a stall not too far called Karishma International (Mumbai), the prices are even more attractive. You can find something for as little as Rs. 500 and as much as Rs. 25,000.Karishma specialises in Victorian jewellery and Indian ethnic. For those who have diamonds on their shopping list, there is plenty to choose from. White Fire from Chennai helps you make an educated choice as you are explained the intricacies of the diamond setting, shape, size, clarity and colour.

Their brochure is worth going over as it lists useful information about diamonds, their maintenance as well as other FAQs. Fuzion from Coimbatore displays beautiful square-cut diamonds also known as princess cut diamonds. If it is the traditional you are looking for, visit Rajshree Jewels from Chennai. They have the always-elegant vaira thodu in the typical closed setting. Finger rings abound with diamonds in various shapes and sizes. But what is difficult to ignore is a magnificent ‘mango necklace’ crafted in gold, diamonds and rubies. It is almost Rs. 18 lakh. It is not just about tradition and old fashions, there is plenty of the quirky too. A better word would be unusual.

At Shrians from Delhi, gold squares with hand painted Ganeshas on them link four strings of emeralds. It is a work of art.In the same stall, big necklaces with polki and precious and semi-precious stones stand out. They have the kind of jewellery that would look as good with a Kanjeevaram as they would with a Donna Karen.

But it is the old-fashioned designs that still grab the eyeballs. Amrapali has beautiful stuff. Its neckpieces with matching jhumkas and bracelets take one’s breath away. Each piece is exquisitely simple and unfussy. Do not forget to ask Amrapali’s rep Dayanidhi to show you the Dholki design necklace. He will show them in several versions — single-stringed, double and even triple-stringed. Beautiful.

When you can tear your eyes away from the jewellery, peek intoVSS Jewellers from Rajahmundry. They have interesting artefacts. One of them is a beautifully-crafted metal cow! And it costs Rs 1,600. They also have a handcrafted tortoise, almost as pretty.

Pearls, silver ware, gift articles and more gold and diamonds…A mood enhancer if ever.

The exhibition is on till September 1, between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.
